Georgia Travel Tips - The Cherry Blossom Festival
By Travel Editor
People are surprised to discover that Georgia has so many cherry trees, especially since the place is known as as The Peach State ...
There are several events that take place across the country that get national attention. It seems that the events that are geographically closest to us are the ones that we are most familiar with. I had never heard of the cherry blossom festival in Georgia until we happened to be visiting the state last March. It is a wonderful event that I am sure I will attend again.
We were in Georgia for a conference and had decided to take some extra time to explore the area. When we mentioned this to the hotel manager he told us to make sure we take part in the cherry blossom festival. He told us that the event was held in the prime of the trees being in bloom. The event featured parades, concerts and carnival rides. Each night of the event also had fireworks displays.
The cherry blossom festival was about 20 miles from where we were staying, but the event is so popular that we could not have found a place to stay that was closer. Several people staying at the hotel were there for the cherry blossom festival. The timing was perfect the event began in 2 days and would run during the time we were scheduled to be there.
My husband and I rented a car and took a drive the day before the cherry blossom festival was to begin. We had heard about a country inn that serves good lunches so we set out to see if we could find it. When we got onto the country roads I could not believe the number of cherry blossoms. They were every where. The air was heavy with the sweet smell that the blossoms give off. I had no idea that Georgia was so many cherry trees.
I mentioned this to the owner of the country inn where we had lunch. She said that because they are known as The Peach State, people are surprised to discover the number of cherry trees. We had a delicious lunch at the inn. She had the entrance to the small restaurant decorated with a grape vine that she had decorated with cherry blossom. The wonderful smell filled the dining room.
After lunch we continued our drive along the country roads. Everywhere we looked you could see cherry blossoms. We had talked about going to Washington DC during cherry blossom time because we have heard it is so beautiful. After our experience in Georgia, I am sure we will also make a trip to Washington.
We enjoyed our extended visit in Georgia. The cherry blossom festival was a fun time. There were several celebrities in concert and the fire works displays were great.
